A used 42U server cabinet sells on eBay for between $250 and $600. A new 12U Gator studio rack is $199.99. Same money, three and a half times the height, and the big cabinets usually arrive with fans, shelves and a power strip fitted.
That is the case for a server rack for studio gear, and it holds, because audio and IT build to the same 19 inch standard. But the standard covers less than people assume, and a data centre cabinet solves problems a control room does not have. Some of it is free capacity. Some comes off with a screwdriver.
What the 19 inch standard actually guarantees
Both worlds descend from EIA-310, revised to E in 1996, with IEC 60297 and DIN 41494 as the equivalents elsewhere. Wikipedia's 19 inch rack article confirms professional audio uses that same standard for amplifiers, effects units and small mixers. Your Akai S950 was drawn to it as surely as a switch.

The holes repeat in threes, and the U boundary sits mid-way through the 0.500 in gap rather than at a hole. Misread it and everything above sits half a unit out forever.
The part that matters more: DDB Unlimited states flatly that EIA-310 does not standardise hole type, mounting depth or rail obstructions. The faceplate is standardised. The cabinet is not.
Rails, holes and posts: the part that decides it
Audio gear hangs off its front ears, and that drives everything. A 1U server has rear rails and a chassis meant to be carried at four points; an Oberheim Matrix-1000 has two ears and nothing at the back. Rear support for audio gear is an accessory you order: QSC sends you to customer service, Ashly sells an FA series kit at $39.

The counterintuitive part: square holes suit vintage audio better than the threaded rails on a purpose-built studio rack. RackSolutions notes a square hole becomes a thread instantly with a cage nut, and Gearspace supplies the other half: cheap racks use soft rail metal, and one over-tightened screw kills the thread for good.
Which screw thread, and why South Africa gets the easy answer
10-32 UNF at 4.8 mm is the native thread of American audio racks; Middle Atlantic sells its rails as 10-32 threaded. 12-24 at 5.6 mm turns up on most pre-threaded American server racks. M6 is, per Comms Express, the UK and EU default. They are not interchangeable.
South Africa follows the global convention, so a local second-hand cabinet will almost certainly be M6 square hole. The easy case: the equipment ear is a slot, not a thread. Fit M6 cage nuts, use M6 screws, done.
Two post or four post?
Since audio gear only uses front mounting, a two post open frame gives you exactly the mounting your gear uses and none of the cabinet's problems: no doors, no fans, no dead depth, full access behind, and per RackSolutions "potentially half the cost". Buy four post for dust protection, locking sides, or a computer.
The forums are relaxed about front ears carrying the load. One Gearspace regular reckons they buckle at thirty times the weight of a piece of gear, and a Neve 33609 is not falling out of a wall.
Fan noise, and the fix that works
The biggest real objection, and entirely solvable. A stock RS PRO 1U six fan tray runs on 230 V AC and is specified at 51 dB, unusable in a room where you are listening to a reverb tail.
The voltage is the point. Stock trays and roof fans are commonly mains voltage AC induction fans, and an AC fan cannot be safely slowed by the tricks used on computer fans. So do not slow them. Unplug the AC assembly and fit a 12 V DC kit with its own adapter and controller. AC Infinity's roof kit is rated 26 dBA, a Noctua NF-A12x25 at 22.6.
StorageReview rebuilt an Eaton rack with Noctua fans and measured 41 dB before, 35 dB after, calling that unscientific themselves. Passive works too: outboard does not dump kilowatts the way servers do.
Mains and earthing: the one genuine audio objection
A metal cabinet bolts every chassis in your signal chain to one steel frame. Sound On Sound puts it exactly: the frame "creates yet another earth current path between different pieces of equipment", and it is "especially problematic when equipment casings contact the rack directly". A real objection, not a shrug.
The deeper cause is usually the gear. Rane Note 110 is blunt: it is not the presence of earth current that hums, it is that current flowing through a unit's audio signal ground. Most makers land XLR pin 1 on signal ground rather than chassis, contrary to AES48, and vintage gear predates AES48. If a service is due, this belongs with what a recap costs.
Never defeat the mains earth. Sound On Sound says it without softening: removing mains earths is not a good thing, do not try it at home. It is dangerous under fault conditions and leaves gear unprotected. No lifted earth pins, no cut earth wires, no adapters that drop the third pin. A ground lift switch on a signal shield is a different object entirely, and confusing the two is how people get hurt.
What the sources endorse: nylon bolts and washers to isolate gear from the frame, transformer isolation where balanced meets unbalanced, shields to chassis at the point of entry, one distribution point for the rack, mains down one side and signal down the other. Then build up a unit at a time, testing for hum.
The doors come off
Doors exist for airflow containment and security. Server makers want perforation of 63 percent and up, and TOTEN quotes 75 percent on its 42U front door. Neither reason applies to you. You need to see meters, reach knobs and repatch, and a glass door is a reflective panel in a room where you paid to kill reflections.
Removal is designed in and usually tool free. Lenovo's 42U documentation is one instruction: hold the door, lift both hinge pins until they lock open, and it is off. Keep them so the cabinet sells on complete. The worry about rail setback swallowing deep knobs goes with the door.
Depth and width: the floor space you are buying
Cabinets come 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 mm deep, the deeper two meant for rail mounted servers. Audio gear is nothing like that deep. Practitioners on Gearspace and HomeRecording report an Apogee Rosetta 200 at about 12 in and a Millennia TD-1 at 13.5 in with knobs, calling 16 to 18 in the sweet spot. Add 100 to 150 mm for cables.
So a 1000 mm cabinet is twice as deep as anything going into it: half a metre of dead air, eating floor space in a room where floor space is expensive. Buy 600 or 800 mm deep, the cheaper end, and measure the outliers. A mainframe like the t.c. electronic M5000X is not a 12 inch box.
Internal depth is not maximum mounting depth. Tech Service Today gives an example of 35 in internal offering only 29.4 in of rail depth. The two differ by 2 to 12 inches, and it is often unpublished. Measure it.
Weight, centre of gravity and castors
Load ratings are a non-issue. An APC NetShelter SX 42U is rated between 1,364 and 1,700 kg static depending which source you read, both agreeing on 1,023 kg dynamic. Even a budget cabinet at 300 kg is far beyond a rack of outboard.
Where the weight sits matters more. Oracle's rack safety documentation says load from the bottom up so the rack does not go top-heavy and tip: amps and power distribution at the floor, heavy valve units low, patch panels at the top, anti-tilt bar out first. Anything without ears rides a vented cantilever shelf.
Castors and levelling feet usually both ship as standard, but rolling a loaded cabinet is another matter. An empty APC 42U is 125 kg. Retract the feet before moving it, and note that ServerLIFT, who move racks for a living, publish guidance titled "Avoid Moving Fully Loaded Server Cabinets".
Buying second hand, and what it costs
Nobody has surveyed what goes missing from used cabinets, so this is a checklist, not a prediction. A refurbisher selling a complete APC AR3300 itemises doors, keys, adjustable mounting posts, locking side panels, cable runway, castors and levelling feet, and that they bother is the tell. Check all of it, plus shelves and blanking panels, and whether the mounting profiles adjust or are fixed. Cage nuts and screws never come with a used cabinet.
Used in the United States, from eBay: a CPI MegaFrame at $249.99, a Dell RML 42U at $350, an HP 10642G2 at $400, an APC NetShelter SX 42U at $600. Refurbished Grade A with doors and keys, an AR3300 is $1,199.95. New in the UK it is £1,009.04 excluding VAT.
New in South Africa, from PriceCheck: an Acconet 42U 800 mm deep at R8,729.60, a Linkbasic 42U 800 deep with four fans and three shelves at R8,830, a Netix 42U 600 by 800 at R9,349, a Cattex 42U 600 by 1000 at R13,130. We could not verify one South African second-hand price for a floor standing 42U; Gumtree returned only small unbranded wall boxes at R1,250 to R2,450. Watch the classifieds and the IT asset disposal firms yourself. Against importing, the duty, VAT and freight arithmetic is a separate sum.
Cage nuts, rack screws and the washers that save a faceplate
Cage nuts come in 10-32, 12-24 and M6 and latch into the square hole to give you a thread. For rails and shelves, insert from the back, spring clips facing you. Buy the tool: RackSolutions notes cage nuts "can be installed and removed by hand, but doing so can damage your hand". Get one that extracts too.
Then the cup washers, where vintage gear is won or lost. Hammond's 1421 series exists for one stated reason: cup washers "distribute clamping force over a larger area, helping reduce the chance of marking equipment faceplates". A 1980s brushed aluminium panel has one surface, and a screw head dragged across it leaves a mark that stays. On a Distressor, not optional trim.
Choose nylon over nickel-plated steel. They protect the faceplate and isolate the ear from the rail electrically, which is precisely Sound On Sound's remedy for the extra earth path. Two problems, one washer, about R50.
Blanking panels earn their keep for a better reason than airflow. A GroupDIY thread documents a tube preamp's mains transformer radiating a field that induced hum into units a few U away, cured by a 2 mm steel plate between them. Steel shields magnetically, aluminium does not, so a steel blank under a Teletronix LA-2A does more than tidy up. Put hot units high: valve gear like The Phoenix runs hottest. And leave gaps.
When a server cabinet is the wrong answer
- You have 8 to 12U of gear. A 42U cabinet is mostly empty steel. Buy a 12U studio rack for about $200.
- You need to move it. 125 kg empty is not mobile. Get a rolling studio rack; the sloped-top versions exist because sightlines matter.
- It lives in a control room clients sit in. Not a technical argument. Still real.
- You only need front mounting, which for vintage audio is nearly always true. A two post frame does the same job for half the money.
What we could not verify
- South African second-hand prices for floor standing 42U cabinets. Only new retail and small used wall boxes.
- How far the front rails sit behind the door. No manufacturer publishes it. Adjustable rails are verified; the number is not.
- The APC static load. Two sources give 1,364 kg and 1,700 kg for the same cabinet. Only the dynamic figure agrees.
- Rack ear slot dimensions. No dimensioned spec published anywhere. "M6 fits" is received wisdom.
- Whether a generic IT power distribution unit suits studio use. No comparative evidence either way.
- Glass door reflections. Our argument is reasoning, not measurement.
- The hum frequency of a magnetostrictive transformer. The mechanism is documented, the number usually quoted with it is not.
- That a cabinet resonates worse than a studio rack, or that isolation feet improve sound. No evidence.
So what goes in it
Most of what we sell is 19 inch. Rack samplers from a Roland S-550 upward, a subject of its own on the Akai sampler shortlist. Compressors, where the dbx 160 decoder stops you buying the wrong decade. Line mixers like the Roland M-240R, patching like the Akai MB76. Buy the cheap cabinet, spend the difference on what fills it.
